Hell in Heels

For my paper on social media strategies, I would like to examine the idea of how a social media site, similar to myspace or facebook could help dance team directors, performers, casting directors, professional AND unprofessional dancers, and free-lance choreographers (such as myself), expand their creative horizons and learn from each other. The site could offer options to upload videos of some of your previous work, headshots, resumes, and have options for discussion boards as well as the option to blog.

I will research how social media sites used for networking have impacted organizations in the past, and explore how they may continue to shape the way we communicate, more specifically network, in the future.

Local opportunity

The Austin Turfcats are an indoor football league based right here, out of Austin! The team is pretty new, going on its second season, and part of the IFL (Indoor Football League). Tryouts for their dance and cheer squad, the Lady Cats, was in late September… but they are holding a second audition for a few more spots  on March 3rd at 7pm. Who ever takes these spots will have some work to do because the first game of the season is April 2nd! Not sure why they suddenly have spots open on the team, but I think it’s a great opportunity to intermingle some new faces and talent to the dance scene in Austin. I’m hoping to try out if I can assure that a knee injury I suffered this summer is good to go! Other than this tryout for the Turfcats, the next tryout for a local team will likely be for the Texas Stars Diamond District Ice Girls this summer, followed by the San Antonio Spurs Silver Dancers at the beginning of August. After the Spurs tryouts, Austin Toros Capitol City Dancers usually hold their tryouts in early September, and last but not least, Austin Turfcats tryouts are usually in mid-late September. If you are thinking of trying out for an NFL team, the closest option is going to be the Houston Texans Cheerleaders, which is held in the spring/early summer. Check out my links section because 2 of the websites I listed there (ultimatecheerleaders.com and procheerblog.com) are really great about posting tryout dates and results for teams of every caliber and size. You can also make a list of teams you are interested in and visit their respective website and see if they have posted tryout dates for the 10-11 year yet. I would recommend that route, as well as writing the dates on your calendar so that you get a good look at how long you have to prepare for these big days! If you are interested in the Turfcats try out, visit their facebook page or check them out online HERE!

Introductory thoughts…

Posted by: missnicola on: February 3, 2010

I’ve never been too technical with anything… except maybe cell phones. I was the first person out of everyone I knew to get a blackberry. I didn’t know how to use it except to talk and text (duh), but I had one. And then the iPhone came into my life, such a beautiful day! I know 800% that I don’t use the phone for half as much stuff as I could! So, now that I have started this class about social media, we are using twitter and wordpress for blogs… I’m adding in another new years resolution… get more tech savvy. Fair warning-this will be a slow, arduous process. But I am determined to learn!

So here’s my introduction- if I do actually get any followers on this thing, you will see a combo plater of  things I deem necessary to blog about as well as possible school related topics. The good news is- my teacher referenced Spoon and The Black and White Years in class the other day as an example, so I’m pretty sure she’s a badass, and will have us blog about legit topics. Ok, back to the introduction.. I’m fun. My life varies from being t-totally interesting to quite boring. I live in the extremes. WAY too peppy and happy OR super mopey, despite that, I’ll always admit that the glass is half full. I think I just made myself sound bi-polar… look, this is interesting already! :)   So I’m wrapping up my time at Texas State and college has been a crazy ride for me. I started out at a small school on a dance scholarship where I did nothing but eat, sleep, and practice. NO FUN. Then I moved to another small, and very conservative school. Somehow I decided to transfer to Texas State… what a difference! I live in south Austin, and I very much adore it. I adore most things, actually. Here comes one of those super peppy moods! Puppies, rainbows, gumdrops, and sunshine!!!!!!!!!!! I’m thinking I might blog about a few different topics… health? fitness? dance? things to do in Austin? I’ll narrow it down this week… or I could go for the combo platter approach, which would actually fit my personality better, cause let’s face it, keeping me directly on topic is not a task to be taken lightly!

So I need to talk a little about a video we watched in class the other day…about… THE INTERNET. The video was bananas! I think I actually need to do a little research now to follow up cause the lingo was a little over my head (scroll up for a recap about how I’m a goober when it comes to technology).  But it was really interesting to see the progression of the net… and to laugh at all those HUGE computers… gotta admit that I’m jealous that I don’t invent stuff when I’m just sitting around… thats how e-mail was created?! Are you serious?  It’s so amazing to look back at the progression we’ve made! What kind of assignment would I be doing if the net was never invented? And how much of a stinkin convenience is it?! One time, I got a flat tire on my way to San Marcos for class (I-35 south from Austin)… well I had a super strict teacher who said if you’re assignment doesn’t get turned in, you get dropped from the class. So here I am, freaking out on the side of the highway, while tripe A takes their sweet ass time to come help me. NO, I don’t know how to change a flat… anyway, I was able to send my assignment to my teacher, via iPhone, from the side of the road, because thankfully, I had emailed the assignment to myself! SCORE! Anyway, while the video was going I was thinking WOW what would life be like if we didn’t have these capabilities. I have always said there are a few things in life that truly fascinate me… God, pregnancy (the baby grows inside us?!!?!), and the internet. Even after watching the video and having it explained, I’m still ahhh-mazed. I’m hoping this class will help me get over my utter bewilderment of technology and learn to put it to use!

So this is the end of blog 1. I hope I have not bored you too much. Do not fear… excitmenet and entertainment are coming soon. I just need to figure out how to navigate this ting! Looks pretty easy so far… I’m up for the challenge!

It’s rainy today, so be safe everyone!
